OUR CLASSROOM

Welcome to Room 222,

Tall windows, yellow bricks, and NEW carpet - THIS IS HOME! In this classroom, it is critical that we pursue our academic endeavours in a safe and respectful manner. Please read on about important aspects of our classroom environment:

W.I.C.R.

Social studies education - including the study of government - must challenge students to write, inquire, read, and collaborate. These are the pillars of this classroom experience. As a student, you should start to see how everyday we will be doing a little bit of each of these things. Reading is a lifelong skill that we should all be continuously striving to improve upon. The ability to write will allow you to communicate YOUR ideas in a more concise and purposeful way. Inquiry is at the heart of all of our lessons - we should always be asking tough questions to our leaders, our government, and ourselves. Finally, what makes social studies more social than collaboration? Our desks will often be in pairs and group formations to encourage ACADEMIC DISCUSSIONS of texts, events, and ideas.

MSTV

This year I will be practicing an approach to improve student dialogue called "Making Student Thinking Visible." Under this framework, we will be emphasizing academic vocabulary and helping better learn from each other. It is important that we not waste our limited class time on distracting conversations and devices. As is school policy, NO CELL PHONES ARE PERMITTED IN THIS ROOM. If one is seen or heard in this class, a detention will be issued. Please leave these devices out of sight and out of mind. As your teacher, I will be doing the same! School-issued laptops will be used frequently in class and should be brought to class everyday unless otherwise indicated.
